A 3/4 Complete Report of The Nerdist Live in Boulder

I had exactly 3.5 hours to drive about a half hour from Westminster to Boulder find a place to park, which in Boulder is no easy feat, walk into to the Boulder Theater enjoy comedy sets from 4 comedians and a live recorded podcast and return to Westminster for a kid pick up from the rec center by 10:30 Was I able to make it? No. Andrea and I had to leave the theater shortly after the Nerdist crew brought out the special guest for the podcast Phil Plait the Bad Astronomer. But some Nerdist Live is better then none.

The sets were booze infused (Jonah Ray) and sobriety infused (Chris Hardwick) good natured albeit sometimes snarky exchanges with the reved up yet somehow self hatingBouldercrowd. One heckler actually yelled “Boulder Suck A**” at the top of hear lungs and later “Geopolitical Saved by theBell” which the boys rightly called the strangest heckle ever.

Over all the sufficiently imbibed, nerd warriors in the crowd settled in for funny stories from the Chris, Jonah, Matt and Denver native Adam Clayton-Holland who actually tore it up with a smart set using all the right local references to help get a roar out of the crowd. Matt worked in his nerd savant take on Star Trek Nemesis. Jonah drank and quipped about drinking as well as reading a slam poem he found in one of his high school notebooks. And finally Chris brought the funny with tales of over-excited hamsters, and awkward moments from his teenage love life. Once the boys settled in for the actual podcast unfortunately it was time for Andrea and I to scoot. I will have to listen to the rest when it posts. Also because of our early departure I wasn’t able to get picture this time. Nevertheless it was better outing then say The Phantom Menace in 3D, I think. Cheers to the Nerdist Industrialists for stopping by our neck of the woods and I’ll forward to more from the podcast and the many other ventures they are embarking on. -E

Talking Tweedy,and a Wilco Soundcheck

Just a quick recommend for The Nerdist Episode 169 with Wilco. Chris, Jonah, and Wil Wheaton (Stand By Me, Star Trek Next Generation) interview Jeff Tweedy of Wilco. Jeff talks a bit about his writing process, about how his Dad did some analogue hacking with his HAM radio back in the day and at the end you can hear Wilco soundcheck One Wing, and Rising Red Lung. Give it listen  – E

Podcast length: 1:09:17

Notes: No Matt Mira, Wilco fan Wil Wheaton subs

Comic Book Clerks

Arguably the early to mid nineties was the golden age of indie crossover films: Reservoir Dogs, Slacker, Wild at Heart, My Own Private Idaho, and Clerks. Even though I would have preferred Jay and Silent Bob to be bit characters in one movie and one movie only, I did like Clerks.

Since then Kevin Smith has had his ups and downs as a director, I’ll leave it there. Last year the man blasted himself out of a cannon with a new movie DIY distribution model and the release of RedState, and multiple podcasts under the Smodcast network. Now sandwiched between the Walking Dead and the Talking Dead Sunday nights on AMC you’ll find Smith in a new cable endeavor called Comic Book Men. Call it a cross between Pawn Stars and Big Bang Theory and with a Jerseyspin. I watched my first episode last night and enjoyed it. Street hockey ala Clerks, a replica of the 1966 Batmobile, an original light saber hero prop from Empire Strikes Back, and Jason Mewes, Jay to Smith’s Silent Bob, made the show an interesting jaunt. In between the show segments Smith interviews the comic book men in his podcasting studio and breaks down the activity in the store. Even though AMC is leading the cable charge in one hour dramas I think they are now nibbling at the ratings success of the Pawn Stars, and Gold Rushes in the basic cable universe. In the end I have to give credit to Smith for taking his destiny into his own hands and doing what you can tell is a passion of his. Between onslaughts of the undead, and talking about onslaughts of the undead comic book, sci-fi, and comedy fans should keep an eye for Comic Book Men you might even find out what that X-Men collection you’ve been holding onto is worth (not as much as you think). -E

Revenge of the Nerdist

What is the Nerdist Way? A way to channel you nerd strengths and manage your time and life to reach the next level according to Nerdist.com’s description of Chris Hardwick’s book The Nerdist Way. And there is no question Hardwick, and his comedy strike team of the Un-nicknameable Jonah Ray, and former computer store named after a fruit worker Matt Mira have reached the next nerdist level.

2 years ago in February 2010 while most of the world was watch the Superbowl these three amigos decided to start a podcast (Number 1 – Tom Lennon). Since the Hardwick has led the charge with multiple Live Nerdist appearances, including March 2 at the Boulder Theater (ticket s in hand), a pilot of a Nerdist TV show on BBC America and sponsoring multiple additional podcasts including The Indoor Kids, and Tom Wilson’s (Biff from Back to the Future) Big Pop Fun. In short these wily coyotes have unleashed a plan to build a DIY Empire to over take the media with no apologies to Howard Stern, not that any were required.

The Nerdist is definitely in the heavy rotation for me. Even though they score some of the best interviews in the podcast world, most recently Wilco, Conan O’Brian, and Bob Odenkirk I actually enjoy some of the non guest “hostful” episodes the best. Today I thoroughly enjoyed the Sound Board  Episode where the boys played the isolated audio of Steve Harwell from Smashmouth versus isolated audio from David Lee Roth and the fun in funny commences. My main menu links to the Nerdist check out what all the fuss is about and start to use your nerd strengths to reach the next level. – E

Never Not Listening

The year was 2006 and I wasn’t even completely sure what a podcast was. During the my regular walks around our neighborhood in our small town in Minnesota I needed something to listen to and so it was I first discovered Never Not Funny. Jimmy Pardo brought the old school to the new school with his keenly honed quick fire comedy jabs to a new medium that had only previously been tread by the likes of Ricky Gervais. Nine seasons later Jimmy is still on top of the game and inspiring many of the current podcasters that are now seemingly all over the place. Though the show went through a few format changes including the introduction of pay to listen premium service (only $20 for 35 full episodes), the show has remained  true to itself and almost always never not funny. This week Jimmy hosted Gary Gulman who you might remember from Dane Cook’s Tourgasm or Last Comic Standing. Jimmy seems to get genuine kick out of kibitzing with Gary. There are laughs a plenty and you will come away hungry for a Nothing Bundt Cake. Jimmy is making a Colorado appearance at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen on February 25th. If you haven’t seem him live I recommend it. I was able to see Never Not Funny live with Jimmy and his cohorts live in Denver this last summer and it was an outstanding show. -E

Driving with Mr Daisy

Today on my rampant search to find a cordless drill before the big blizzard of 2012 hits Denver I was listening to the Podcast of This American Life. The episode was Mr. Daisy and The Apple Factory. The story is brought to you by Mike Daisy a technology guru who actually travels to China to see how our Apple’s products are made. It’s an unbelievable story and makes me think more about where our “toys” come from. -E

The Kevin Pollak Game

What are the rules? Thoughtfully interview the people that keep business of show humming along, toss in a couple of twitter based quizzes, mimic Larry King and then say until next time and as always get out of my face. How do you know Kevin Pollak? Need I mention one of the cooler then cool movies to emerge out of the Pulp Fiction dominated mid-90s The Usual Suspects, not to mention a little number called A Few Good Men or maybe the best Christopher Walken impression this side of the Captain Dennis Davern (google it). The plain and simple is the man has skills and is the best interviewer since Mr Carson himself, no not Carlson Daily, the comedy king maker (you can google it as well).

Why do I blog about this chapeaud chap? Mainly because the interviews are the best from any media source going right now. Where else can hear/see 2 hours of uninterrupted one on one time with somebody your into hearing about. How about nowhere. With Freaks and Geeks in tow such as Samm Levine and Jaime Fox (not black, not male, but Yes related), this podcast rates in my highest of high. Don’t make me choose between my podcast children just know it’s damn good. Also KPCS has the best website of any of the podcasts I listen to, bar none, for reals check it out. This week Kevin interviewed Rachel Harris and it was a good outing. I don’t normally watch the video feed and  I like to listen to the audio podcast first and make visual guesses at the guest based on the interview but today I could not immediately picture Rachel. I was quick to do a Google image search and immediately recognized her from the I Love the 90s show  that used to drop on VH1 (is that still a channel?) or This Week Show but she has been in all sorts of funny business including The Hangover. If you haven’t listened to the Kevin Pollak Chat Show please do. Also the word has it from this last episode that it will also be available soon as a video stream provided gratis on Hulu. If anyone emerges from this crazy kooky podcast universe as the new media king my predication is that it will be for the Kevin Pollak, he has the perfect combination funny, charm, and I know just enough about this to get my ass into some serious trouble. Keep any eye out for Kevin Pollak and his Chat Show,  Sleepy Eye Minnesota what have you got?
